Project Description

The purpose of the works was to place excavated material on vertical drainage to provide surcharge. The excavated area was to be excavated to a required level as part of an overall strategy to develop Berth 4 of London Gateway Port.

Excavate, Haul and Place

Excavate, haul and place 600,000m3 of surcharge material in maximum 500mm layers, to a height up to 6m high as per specification over circa 115,000m2. Haul distance was circa 500m.

Placed Material

Placed material was compacted using a 12t vibrating single barrel roller.

V-Ditch

When surcharge was placed a v-ditch was excavated along either side of the surcharge area. Exposed faces of surcharge area were profiled to a 1:2h slope. As the surcharge area was filled care was taken not to hit settlement markers which were placed through the fill area.
